Winter Running Opportunities 2012

We finally have snow on the ground in the Manistee area - just in time for the new year. Several area runners rang in the new year at the Resolution Run in Ludington on New Year's Eve - congratulations to Kelly Schubert for 1st place in the women's division! Here's some races in the Manistee vicinity to keep you active this winter:

Jingle Bell Jog 2011 - Results

Despite steady rain, a nice crowd of around 90 walkers and runners took to the streets of Manistee to compete in the 4th annual Jingle Bell Jog 5K on Saturday December 3rd.

"Abe Bominable" (John Lipa) was the first man while Kelly Schubert was the first woman to finish the 5K run. Ed Zimmerman and Marilyn Gross were the top walkers. Thanks to all who participated and especially thanks to all our sponsors!

EKUP 2011 Results

Ekup 2011 took place Tuesday, November 8th, with some of the most miserable weather the race has experienced in its 23 year history. There was no snow or blowing wind, as previous years have seen, but a steady downpour that gave way to a cold, damp mist soaked and chilled runners to the bone as they tackled the challenging 15K course.

Nearly 40 students, coaches, and parents from the Manistee, Bear Lake, Onekama, and Ludington area showed up to run. Runners started at the Manistee First Baptist Church and continued along Lakeshore Drive until they arrived at Portage Lake Bible Camp in Onekama. Jarret Deisch, a Manistee high school junior, was the first finisher with a time of 58:29.

She did it! Manistee senior Kelly Schubert claimed the overall title on Saturday, winning the MHSAA Girls D3 XC title in a time of 17:58! After finishing 29th two years ago and in 7th place last year, Kelly comes home today a champion!

Schubert stayed several seconds behind the early leader for the first mile, then made a move to pull even with the front-runner during the second mile. On the downhill towards the stadium that starts the third mile, Kelly made a move to first place and didn't look back. She finished with a 25 second victory. Congratulations to our Chippewa Champion!

Freshman Annie Fuller took 11th (19:01) in the same race, while 11th grader Jarret Deisch finished 62nd in the boys race (17:06), moving up over 20 spots ahead of last year's finish. Nice job Chips! Thanks for a great season!

Heading back to State!

Three Chippewas will make the trek to Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn this coming weekend for the MHSAA XC State Finals! After fantastic performances at the regional meet last weekend, Kelly Schubert, Annie Fuller, and Jarret Deisch qualified to run at state.

Kelly S won her second straight regional title, breaking her own course record with a time of 17:36. Annie F was not far behind in 3rd, finishing just a hair behind 2nd place with a time of 18:14. Every other runner on the girls team also ran season best times, finishing in 4th place as a team, just out of reach of the top 3 (and a team spot at state), Eva - 19:55, Sophie - 20:57, Ashley - 21:39, Courtney - 21:51, and Sarah - 22:54.

The boys also had a stellar day, with all 9 boys running PR's. Jarret was 8th (16:29), making state for the second straight year, followed by Tyler Sievert in his final high school race (17:28). Also running awesome times were Jonny (17:59), Colin (18:06), Nick (18:07), Bryce (18:20), Austin M (18:37), Austin F (18:50), and Zach (20:00).

Great job team - you've had fantastic seasons! Good luck this weekend at state Kelly, Annie, and Jarret!

In a final tune-up for Regionals, the Chips ran in their own backyard at the Manistee National Invite (10-22-11). On a sunny day with a soggy course, the girls took 4th in the large school race while the boys finished 5th.

Kelly Schubert and Annie Fuller went 1-2 for the girls for the 5th time this season, with Kelly setting a new course record of 18:17 while defending her title from last year. Jarret Deisch was top medalist for the boys in 14th place (17:41) with Jonny Bailey and Tyler Sievert (21st and 22nd) not far behind. Bryce Cameron (19:04) and Colin Bachinski (19:17) ran personal bests as well.

Chris Grabowksi Memorial - 2 trophies!

After a week of great weather, rain returned to Manistee, but it didn't slow down the Chip XC teams, as the girls took first and the boys took second at the Chris Grabowski Memorial Invitational. Six high schools competed in the competition. The girls took first over second place Hart, while the boys were second to Kingsley. The MS girls took first place in their race.

Kelly Schubert set a new course record (18:55) while taking first for the ladies. Annie Fuller was second (20:10) and Eva Guillen was fourth (21:23). All of the other girls on the team ran their best times ever for the home course. Jarret Deisch was 3rd overall, leading the boys, followed by Tyler Sievert (6th 18:37) and Jonny Bailey (7th 19:02). The other boys on the team ran their best home course times as well.

With just 2 weeks until the regional meet, the season is winding down, but the Chips are heading in the right direction!

Jingle Bell Jog 5K 2011

The annual Jingle Bell Jog 5K, a fundraiser for Manistee area cross-country, is scheduled for December 3rd this year. The race will be held, once again, at New Kennedy Elementary, with a course through Manistee neighborhoods as we celebrate Victorian Christmas and Old Sleighbell weekend. Race time is 10 am, entry is $15 ($20 on race day.) Participants receive a specially designed stocking cap with entry.

4 medalists at Spartan Invite! (And 2 at West Shore!)

What a weekend! The majority of the Chippewa team made the trip to East Lansing on Friday, home of the MSU Spartan Invite and thousands of runners competing in an afternoon of races. After watching Manistee alum run the college mens' race, the Chip girls (minus Kelly) racing in the White race, made up of mostly D3 and D4 schools (though I saw a few class A schools mixed in there too!) After trailing 2 all-state runners for most of the meet, freshman Annie Fuller kicked it into high gear with 250 meters to go and emerged the champion in the race with an outstanding time of 18:26! Eva Guillen dropped her time by nearly 2 minutes and also took a medal, running 20:33! Ashley, Sophie, and Courtney also ran season bests, with Sarah not far behind. Minus team captain Kelly, the girls took 10th of 35 schools! Nice Job!

The boys didn't want to be outdone, as 6 of 7 guys also ran season best times, led by Jarret D's medal winning 15th place time of 16:59. Jonny, Tyler, Colin, Austin M, and Nick (broke 19!) ran SB's, with Bryce not far behind. The boys were 15th of 32 schools.

Finally, the girls elite race, with the top-ranked teams and runners in the state racing together. Kelly S ran a blistering time of 18:16, finishing 7th in the fastest race in Michigan so far this year. Way to go Chips!

On Saturday, Austin F and Zach K got their chance to race at the Ludington Invite, joined by 4 hearty guys who showed up to race for the second straight day. Despite pacing teammates for the first two miles, Tyler S and Jonny B ended up with medals, running even faster (by 30-40 seconds!) than they did on the same course last year. Austin F was 3 and a half minutes faster than last year. Nice improvement!

2nd place at Hill and Bale

The Chippewa teams hurdled the competition Saturday, with both boys and girls taking home second place trophies at the Fremont Hill and Bale Invitational. Kelly S and Annie F took home 1st and 2nd overall, respectively, while Eva G, Courtney S, Ashley T, and Sophie S also took home medals. For the boys, Jarret D led the way with an 8th place overall finish, while Jonny B and Tyler S placed with medals too.

Chips bring home hardware from Manton!

The MHS XC teams combined to take 2nd overall Wednesday at the Manton Fox & Hound Invitational, but they brought home the first place trophy! A scoring error led to the Chips initially being announced as meet champions, but after the jubilant Chips returned to the team bus the error was spotted. Out of the 12 schools racing, Manistee took 2nd behind GTA, besting Evart, Kingsley, Manton, and TCSF, to name a few teams.

All 8 girls racing finished with medals, with PR's from Annie Fuller (19:19), Eva Guillen (22:14), Sarah Chandler (22:57), Courtney Stefanski (23:02), and Julia Scherlin (24:36). Many boys ran their season best times, with PR's from Jonny Bailey (18:25), Nick Veine (19:01), Colin Bachinski (19:33), Bryce Cameron (20:11), and Zach Kopfman (22:05). Team results here.

Soaked at Brethren

We only had a small MHS representation at the Brethren Days 5K this year, but it was a memorable race! A steady downpour and the rumble of thunder in the distance gave this race some extra character. Sophomore Nick Veine finished 4th overall in the annual 5K run in 19:41, finishing just 6 seconds behind coach Thuemmel. Coach Guzikowski was 13th, his time of 22:06 not too shabby considering he was in the middle of working 3 shifts in 32 hours! Several other Manistee grads and supporters got soaked racing as well. Next year is the 15th annual running of this Labor Day weekend event.

XC team - practice Monday at 4:30, school and our regular practice schedule starts Tuesday. Meets this week Wednesday (at Manton - girls race starts at 5pm) and Saturday (at Fremont - the Hill and Bale - girls run at 9am.) Link to info on the Fremont race here.

Records broken at opening meets

At least 3 cross-country records have been broken by Manistee's team in just the first two meets of the year!

Running in their opening meet at the 40-school Benzie Central Eldon "Pete" Moss Invitational, the Chippewa girls took 9th of 13 schools in the large school "Red" division, while the boys finished 13th of 14 schools in that same division.

Leading the way was Kelly Schubert with a time of 17:56, defeating defending D3 state champion Ali Weirsma of Allendale by 2 seconds. Both girls broke the 10 year-old previous course record of 18:02, held by a former D1 champion. Annie Fuller ran a great time of 19:50 to take 9th place. She was followed by Sophie Shriver (22:23), Sarah Chandler (23:00), Ashley Tomaszewski (23:10), Eva Guillen (23:25), Courtney Stefanski (23:40), and Julia Scherlin (25:10). 5 of those girls were running their first high school race! The boys were led by Jarret Deisch's 27th place finish (17:28). Jonny Bailey (18:37), Nick Veine (19:10), and Colin Bachinski (19:56) followed with PR times. Also running was Austin Fancher (20:07), Bryce Cameron (20:39), Austin Minx (20:41), Zak Kopfman (22:13), and Sander Karnazes (26:15). Complete boys varsity results here.

On August 30th, the teams opened their home season racing against Mason County Central and Mason County Eastern. The girls emerged victorious with a decisive victory as 7 girls finished in the top 10. Kelly Schubert's winning time of 19:42 was a new home course record (as well as a senior record), while Annie Fuller's 2nd place time of 20:57 broke Kelly's old freshman course record by 44 seconds.

The boys took 2nd of the 3 teams, narrowly being defeated by defending regional champ MCC by only 3 points. Manistee's top 5 runners finished before MCC's, but the Chips couldn't overcome MCC taking 1st, 3rd, and 5th individually. Leading the way with a strong 2nd place performance was Jarret Deisch (17:54), while senior Tyler Sievert was 4th in 19:30, his best showing on the MHS course.

Labor Day weekend: Brethen Days 5K is Saturday 9am for those that are up for it! You may see coach Guz and coach Thuemmel there. We are off practice until Monday (4:30-6 pm, MHS), but you are not off training! Be sure to get a good long run in this weekend as well as several steady mid-distance (3-5 miles) runs. Don't forget school starts Tuesday!

The Manistee HS 2011 Cross-country season is underway! About 20 high school athletes from the Manistee area have been busy running the streets, beaches, and trails in the Manistee area for the last few weeks. Recently we attended our team camp at PJ Hoffmaster State Park near Muskegon - thanks to Mr. + Mrs. Deisch and Mr. Fancher for chaperoning, thanks to all parents who packed gear and drove kids to and from camp, and thanks especially to TES Filer for helping pay for camp! We had a great time!

In case you were wondering - the kids in the top pictures are busy playing the "frozen T-shirt" game!

Race times are 8am (1K Fun Run) and 8:15am (5K Run/Walk).
Early registration is now closed, but you can still register on race day at MHS from 6:45-7:30am.
Cost is $25 5K Run/Walk, $15 1K Fun Run. Registration includes T-shirt.

A small crowd braved a cool and drizzly morning on May 14th, 2011, to participate in the 3rd annual HAM it Up 5K Run/Walk, kicking off the Healthy Active Manistee week festivities. Jay Shillinger of Ludington was the overall winner in 19:38 while Sinead McCann of Manistee was the first female finisher in 26:04. Dale Moody was the male masters' winner (20:39) while Ann Smith and Rita McCann were the top female masters' runners, both crossing the finish line in 27:51. Proceeds from the event supported the Manistee area track and field programs.

Windy Labor Day Weekend

This past weekend saw the XC team's annual course clean up day, with kids and coaches raking, mowing, pruning, and hacking our way through the Manistee course. We had a cool day to work, a welcome relief from all the heat, but it was followed by a massive windstorm that covered our course with more twigs and branches. So we'll be raking again next week before our first home meet. Check out this happy crew below.The next day was the annual Brethren Days 5K, a favorite for Manistee CC runners. It was a windy, cool morning with some drizzle, but it didn't stop some good performances. Tyler S took 2nd overall in 19:13, Nick V and Austin F went 1-2 in the 14-under age group, while Tyler G was 3rd in the 15-19 age group, just missing a PR. Brittany D finished her first race since last year, on her way to recovering from medical setbacks. Coaches Thuemmel (19:58) and Phil G (21:47) ran their best times of the season too. Other familiar Manistee faces running were James Fink, Kyle Thompson, Lisa Fragomeli, and Coach Gary Sielski.

The Manistee XC teams started their 2010 season on Saturday Aug 28th. The boys ran first, with Jarret Deisch finishing 16th with a new PR, 17:31. Other Varsity runners were Jonny Bailey (98-20:10), Tyler Sievert (106-20:40), Nolan Gunia (107-20:56), Colin Bachinski (113-21:43), Cody McShane (114-21:54), and Trent Schmeling (120-24:07). Austin Fancher (89-22:42), Tyler Guzikowski (122-25:24), and Dakota Schwartz (132-28:27) ran in the JV race.

For the girls, Kelly Schubert's 3rd place time of 19:05 is the fastest time ever run by a Manistee HS girl. Lacey Krolczyk (81-24:36), No'el Solis (90-25:16), Ashley Tomaszewski (101-26:08), Courtney Stefanski (102-26:13), and Allie Harthun (111-27:44) finished out the squad for the ladies. Both Boys and Girls finished 15th in the tough 18 team field.

Next meet is at White Cloud on Sept. 8th. Practice times this week are MT (8-9:30 am) WTh (4-5:30 pm) with Friday morning being the annual course clean up morning, 10-12 am. Also, many athletes are running the Brethren Days 5K this Saturday am.

16 athletes and several coaches and adults attended the 2010 Manistee XC team camp, held again this year at PJ Hoffmaster State Park near Muskegon. In addition to running, running, and more running, team members went swimming, played capture the flag, and had fun at Craig's Cruisers. Watch out for Courtney on the slick track!

Manistee 2010 Cross-Country Season Begins!

The fall cross-country season is about to begin for Manistee HS and Cath. Central. Practice begins Wednesday August 11th, with practice times at 8-9:30 am and 5-6:30 for the 11th, 12th, and 13th. Athletes need only attend one session a day. All practices meet at Manistee HS unless noted. Athletes need to have a physical on file at the high school in order to participate.

The Manistee Firecracker 5K is this Saturday July 3rd at 8am! Runners and volunteers we'll see you there bright and early. Remember, registration workers need to be there from 6:30-8, while finish line workers need to be there from 7:45-9:30. Set up is Friday from 6-7pm.

The rolling 5K course enjoys a scenic loop through some of our neighborhoods and a view of the beach, all starting and finishing at Manistee High School.

Packet Pick-up and Race Day Registration:

Awards Ceremony will take place immediately following the 5K race. Categories:

• Overall First Place 5K runners Male and Female

• Overall Male and Female Masters (40+) division

• Top 3 Male & Female in each age group get awards

• Walkers – Top 5 Males and Females overall

• Fun Run awards to top 5 boys and girls finishers 12 and under

• All fun runners get a medal!

Age Divisions:

There will be 15 age group categories for men and women in the 5K run: 10-under, 11-13, 14-16, 17-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70+ up

T-Shirts:

All entrants receive a 100% cotton specially designed T-shirt. Sizes are NOT guaranteed to late registrants. Shirts can be picked up the day of the race at the packet pick-up.

Donations:

Proceeds from the race support the Manistee area track programs and the construction of a new community. If you would like to pledge an additional amount above your entry fee, it would be greatly appreciated and can be tax deductible.

The race date for two upcoming 5K runs have been announced. On Saturday, May 15 at 9 am, the H.A.M. (Healthy Active Manistee) 5K run will take place, while on Saturday, July 3rd, the Asics Firecracker 5K will have it's annual 5K run, 5K walk, and 1K fun run, starting at 8 am. Both races start and finish at Manistee High School (525 12th St.) and proceeds from each support the Manistee Track Fund. Race forms will be available soon!

Schubert All-State

Kelly Schubert finished 29th out of 250 runners in the girls' D3 state finals race on Saturday, Nov. 7th at Michigan International Speedway, earning All-State status. Running in pleasant 50's temperature but with stiff south winds, Kelly ran a time of 20:00.0. Great job, Kelly! See the pictures of Kelly at the finals, joined by teammates Allie, Brian F, Jonny, and former MHS runners Ari Sheffield and Ethan Coppola.

We're on our way to MHSAA State Finals this weekend! Kelly Schubert is the first MHS girl to qualify for the Cross-Country state finals since the 90's! Her time of 19:35 not only got her 3rd place at the regional, but it was also the fastest recorded time of any MHS girl runner in the past decade. She races at 10:30 am Saturday the 7th.

As a team, the MHS girls and boys both took 7th at Regionals in Benzie (10-31-09). For the girls, that's the same finish place as last year (despite having 7 less runners on the team) and for the boys that's a 3 place improvement over '08 - even without the 8 fastest runners from last year's team!

For the girls, Lacey Krolczyk was 23rd (22:05 - PR by a minute!), No'el Solis was 40th (23:39 - PR!), Erin Crothers was 44th (23:52 - PR!), and Courtney Stefanski was 68th (25:37 - just missed a PR and best time since fracturing her foot last month!) Great job ladies!

For the boys, Jarret Deisch just missed the state finals, finishing 19th in 17:55 - not bad for a freshman. Tyler Sievert (19:09), Brian Fisk (20:03), Jonny Bailey (20:04), and Tyler Guzikowski (22:06) all ran PR times, while Markus Kling (20:43) and Nathan Morang (21:04) ran close to their best times, despite the wind, rain, and snow.

2 5K's in 40 hours - Chips at MCC and Pine River

What did you do this weekend? If you're a Manistee HS Chippewa CC runner, you could say that you ran two 5K races before noon on Saturday!

It was gorgeous weather Thursday afternoon (10-1-09) at WSCC for the Mason County Central Invitational. With clear skies and temperatures in the upper 50's, the girls raced to 5th place while the boys took 7th in a 12 school field against some state ranked teams.

Kelly Schubert was 3rd girl (20:48) and Jarret Deisch was the 12th boy (18:07). Not only did the two medalists run their fastest times at WSCC ever, they were the fastest times recorded at WSCC by a Manistee boy and girl in the past 3 seasons!

Other PR's went to Erin Guillen, Jonny Bailey, Nathan Morang, John Stickney, and James Agle, while Erin Crothers got a season best time.

The weather was a whole lot different on Saturday (10-3-09). After steady rain all day Friday, Pine River's course was a mud bog by Saturday morning. Despite running in a constant drizzle, no one lost a shoe and some runners even ended up with new PR's! The girls took 4th at this meet, while the boys were 5th (missed 4th by 1 point!).

Kelly took 2nd overall for the girls, while Jarret was 7th for the boys. Lacey K, Erin C, and Tyler S all placed in the top 30 and took home medals, as did Tyler G and Trent S in the JV race.

New PR's were run by Tyler Sievert, Trinity Derooy, and for the second straight meet, James Agle. In addition, Erin C ran another season best time. She's come within 15 seconds of setting her all-time PR 3 meets in a row now! Maybe next meet.

Chips sweep Reed City!

The Chippewa CC squads defeated Reed City Thursday, with the boys winning 22-39 and the girls prevailing 22-33. Here's what was sent in to the News Advocate:

Sophomore Tyler Sievert led the MHS boys with a second place finish in 20:14. Markus Kling (3rd, 20:36), Jonny Bailey (4th, 21:04), Mason Wallace (6th, 22:01), and Nathan Morang (7th, 22:19) rounded out the scoring for the Chips.

Other finishers for the MHS boys were Trinity Derooy (8th, 22:25), Trent Schmeling (9th, 23:32), Tyler Guzikowski (11th, 23:38), Brian Kimball (13th, 25:07), and John Stickney (14th, 27:31)

Kelly Schubert took first overall for the MHS girls, running the 5K course in 20:37. She was followed by No'el Solis (3rd, 25:19), Erin Crothers (4th, 25:22), Erin Guillen (6th, 27:06), and Courtney Stefanski (8th, 27:40).

PR's on the day were Markus, Jonny, Trent, Tyler Guz, Brian K, Stick, No'el, and Erin G. Enjoy the pictures!

Girls get first hardware of the season!

Saturday - Sept. 19, 2009. Clear skies, ideal conditions for running at WSCC. It was the first time in two years that we actually got to run in dry conditions at West Shore! The Chip girls took 2nd in the Div. 3/4 race, winning their first trophy of the season, while the boys took 3rd.

For the girls, Kelly Schubert was 5th in her division (10th overall) with a time of 21:04, while Jarret Deisch led the boys with a time of 18:19, good for 6th in his division and 19th overall. Those times represent the fastest races recorded by an MHS girl and boy at WSCC in over 3 years!

Running season best times were Erin Crothers, Erin Guillen (welcome to CC!), Trent Schmeling, and John Stickney. Great job, harriers! Next race is Thursday at Reed City.

Chips race at home

Ludington and MCE paid MHS a visit on Tuesday the 15th. After the MS runners did their thing (great job, junior Chips!) the HS girls took off. Kelly Schubert took first with a sophomore course record time of 21:31. Other Chip finishers were Lacey Krolczyk (8th, 25:09), Erin Crothers (12th, 26:13), Courtney Stefanski (13th, 26:20), and No'el Solis (15th, 26:33). The lady Chips fell to the Orioles, 20-41, while MCE finished with an incomplete score.

The MHS boys took 2nd as well, finishing behind the Orioles 15-59, while MCE was 3rd with 65 points. Not the team performance we were hoping for, but we will meet those teams again later this season, and the results will be different!

MHS was led by Jarret Deisch (7th, 19:50), followed by Tyler Sievert (10th, 21:11), Jonny Bailey (13th, 22:02), Marcus Kling (19th, 22:34), Trinity Derooy (22nd, 23:39), Mason Wallace (23rd, 24:16), Nathan Morang (24th, 24:27), Trent Schmeling (26th, 24:45), Tyler Guzikowski (28th, 24:55), John Stickney (31st, 39:56), and James Agle (32nd, 42:08).

The MHS girls are now 3-2 in head to head competition, while the MHS boys are 2-3.

Jumping straw bales (not hay!) at the Fremont Hill & Bale on 9-12, the lady Chips took 5th in their division while the boys finished 7th. Many of the Chip harriers had their all-time best times, including most of the boy finishers! Kelly Schubert finished 10th overall in the 21 school meet, running a personal best 19:52! She was also second in her division, earning her 3rd medal of the year in 3 invitationals. Tyler Sievert was the first boy finisher, breaking 20 minutes for the first time. The young Chip runners saw Jonny Bailey, Trinity Derooy, Nathan Morang, Mason Wallace, and Marcus Kling all run under 22 minutes for the first time. Not bad for 5 guys who just started running CC a few weeks ago. Lacey Krolczyk, Courtney Stefanski, and No'el Solis all ran personal bests too!

Chips beat the heat at White Cloud

The MHS CC team traveled to White Cloud on 9-09-09, running on the second day of school against teams from the old WWAC conference. Battling temps in the 80's, the girls' team took 2nd while the boys took 3rd in the 4 school meet.

Kelly Schubert was the first Chip girl, finishing 3rd in 22:00. Jarret Deisch was the first Chip boy, also 3rd in 19:30. Running PR's were No'el Solis, Mason Wallace, and James Agle.

Brethren High Bridge Hustle!

A large contingent of Manistee runners, parents, and supporters participated in the High Bridge Hustle 5K on Sept. 5th in Brethren. Running in near perfect conditions (calm, clear, low 50's), many new PR's and best times of the year were recorded! MHS runner Kelly Schubert (19:08) was the first female overall finisher, while Jarret Deisch (17:36) was 3rd overall. Also running were Brian Fisk (19:15 - new PR!) , Tyler Guzikowski, and Courtney Stefanski (24:23 - new PR!). Middle school runners Annie Fuller (sub-20!) and Sophie Shriver ran great times as well.

Other familiar faces from Manistee participating were Coach Thuemmel (19:13 - best time in 4 years!), Ethan Coppola, Phil Guzikowski, Dr. Fuller and Jody Fuller, Bill Shriver, Lisa Fragomeli, Julie Deisch, Gary Sielski, Dr. Allen, and James Fink. (Let me know if I forgot anyone!) It was a lot of fun and a great morning of racing!

Incidentally, the overall winner was 17-year old Reed Kamyszek from Kenowa Hills, the defending D2 state champion in cross-country, and leading favorite to win D1 this year. He ran 14:41, a ridiculously fast time, even with a missed turn costing him a few seconds!

Just a quick update - of 15 schools competing today, Manistee HS boys finished 4th while the girls finished 6th at the Manton CC Invitational. Close but no cigar - the top 3 teams got trophies. Kelly Schubert was first overall in the girls 9-10 race while Jarret Deisch won the boys 9-10 run. Other medalists were Tyler Sievert, Brian Fisk, Jonny Bailey, and Lacey Krolczyk. Nice job on winning your first HS medals! Jonny and Lacey ran their PR times, as did Nathan Morang and No'el Solis. Nice work, harriers!

The CC meet at Manton (9-1-09) has had its start time moved back until 6pm on Tuesday night. Bus time from Manistee is now 3:45 pm - and I don't expect our team to get home until around 10 pm.

MHS Chips ran their first meet of the 2009 season on 8-29-09 at the Eldon Moss Invitational at Benzie Central. Racing against some of the top teams in the state in Division I, II, and III, both Chip teams finished in 13th place.

Race Day Almost Here!

The Asics / Manistee Firecracker 5K is almost here! Online Registration is closed, but it's not too late to register and run. Race day registration will take place on race day (Sunday July 5th) at Manistee High School from 6:30 until 7:45 am. Cost is $25 for the 5K and $15 for the Fun Run. The weather forecast looks perfect for running - cool and clear. Hope everyone can make it!

For those volunteering, we'll have set-up at MHS from 6-7:45 pm the night before the race. We need early morning volunteers race day in two shifts: 6:30 - 8:15 am and 7:45 - 9:30 am.

The rolling 5K course enjoys a scenic loop through some of our neighborhoods and a view of the beach, all starting and finishing at Manistee High School.

6:45 to 7:30 a.m.

Awards Ceremony will take place immediately following the 5K race. Finish timing will be handled by Miller Race Management, Bay City.

• Overall Male and Female Masters (40+) division
• Top 3 Male & Female in each age group get awards
• Walkers – Top 5 Males and Females overall
• Fun Run awards to top 5 boys and girls finishers 12 and under

There will be 15 age group categories for men and women in the 5K run: 10-under, 11-13, 14-16, 17-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70+ up

T-Shirts:
All entrants receive a 100% white cotton specially designed T-shirt. Sizes are NOT guaranteed to late registrants. Shirts can be picked up the day of the race at the packet pick-up.

Donations:
Proceeds from the race support the construction of a new community track and for the Manistee area track teams. If you would like to pledge an additional amount above your entry fee, it would be greatly appreciated and can be tax deductible.
